Wenning sets sights on Statehouse

Mar 3, 2010 — The Rushville Republican

Kevin L. Green

The candidate, a 1982 graduate of North Decatur High School who now calls the Westport area home, is seeking the Republican nomination for Indiana State Representative in District 67.

The seat currently is held by Cleo Duncan; she is not seeking re-election.

Wenning said one of her priorities if elected is weighing in on Gov. Mitch Daniels' plan to consolidate several of the offices that currently exist at the county level.

"Having worked in county government as a county clerk, and currently I'm the Decatur County Assessor, I don't think that we should do away with the township trustee people. They are out there in the townships and they are closest to the people they represent. I don't think that a single elected official would have the kind of individual knowledge that is needed. They know who really needs help. I also know of several who help people find work so they can repay the township for the assistance that they've been given. Those kind of people deserve the help if they're just down on their luck, but we don't need to keep helping people who don't even try to help themselves."

She also has reservations about amending the state constitution in order to place permanent caps on property tax rates.

"If property tax caps are already law, let's let the law ride for a few years and see what kind of results we're getting before we make it a permanent change to our state constitution that would be much harder to undo if need be."

Wenning and her husband, Dan, have two children: Jason and Danielle.

In addition to serving as the Decatur County Assessor she also served two terms as the Decatur County Clerk and worked with the Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation District.
